A bit too self consciously cute for my taste The last of the Grub-and-Stakers mysteries features an actual ghost. HIram Jellyby was a 19th century mule skinner murdered for the gold he'd found and hidden. He wants his bones and the gold found, or so he tells Lobelia Falls' formidable widow, Mrs. Zilla Trott. Naturally, Dittany and Osbert Monk get in on the hunt -- although not always at the same time, now that they have twins to mind. Little Annie and Rennie, not to mention alleged dog Ethel (local speculation is that she's the offspring of a black bear and a musk ox); will be present at the climax. This was Ms. MacLeod/Craig's most fanciful series, so don't be surprised at some of the stunts Hiram gets up to (including crashing a party at the inn). Plenty of mysteries get solved: an old bank robbery, what happened to Arethusa Monk's great-grandmother's wedding china, who got a bank security guard killed, and what happened to Hiram's beloved mules. HTML:A widowed gardener meets a ghost from frontier times who's out for revenge: "The screwball mystery is Charlotte MacLeod's cup of tea" (Chicago Tribune). Zilla Trott is pouring her cat some chamomile tea when the drifter appears in her kitchen. He is grubby and crudeâ??not at all the kind of person you'd usually find in the pleasant town of Lobelia Fallsâ??but something about him intrigues the aging widow. Perhaps it's his rugged good looks, or the way he seems to come from another time and place. Or perhaps it's the fact that he's been dead for nearly a century. When Lobelia Falls was in its rough-and-tumble frontier infancy, Hiram Jellyby was the best mule driver the town had ever seen, until an argument over a hidden cache of gold left him bleeding to death in a back alley. He returns in spectral form to secure a proper burial, and finds that in modern-day Lobelia Falls, no one knows more about turning the soil than Zilla Trott's gardening buddiesâ??all members of Dittany Monk's fearless Grub-and-Stake Gardening and Roving C Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
