That's more like it - Annie's being smart again after being seriously dumb in the last book. Starts out with Annie & Daddy together, he having rescued her at the end of the last book; but first a couple show up claiming to be Annie's parents and make it stick, and then Warbucks finds his year away has left his company in dire straits. He ends up shutting down the company and just avoiding bankruptcy - all his money goes to pay off all his debts, including his taxes. Then the tax money is stolen and Warbucks is framed for conspiracy and railroaded off to jail, while Annie's putative parents show their real colors. 'Papa' Bleek is just a crook, and ends up pulling Annie into his latest scheme; Libby Bleek helps shield her as best she can. Annie's got the matter figured out pretty quickly and plays dumb to stay alive while hatching a scheme to get Daddy out of prison and the gang into jail. Unfortunately the same crooked politicos who railroaded Warbucks spoil this scheme - at which point Wun Wey, Flophouse Bill and Jake show up and matters begin to get solved. Happy ending to that, but Warbucks is still broke and refuses any loans, insisting on getting a job - the book ends with him still/again out of work and they resolve to head out of the city. Annoying thing with this book - the back cover picture is from the Eonite story, which doesn't happen until the next book. Confused me a bit. ( ) Annie's apparent real parents show up and are awarded custody of her, but after much time it is learned that they are imposters, golddiggers. Oliver is jailed for non-payment of taxes, and is later freed when the plot to frame him is discovered. But Oliver is again broke, and they're on the road again. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Forget the wretched film and sappy musical; Harold Gray's original Depression-era comic strip was an American classic. A tough, Dickensian melodrama with sharp, political voice, Gray's Annie is gritty, atmospheric, suspenseful and more proletarian in its depiction of the working class than anything since.
