Fiction. Literature. HTML:

"A delightful new voice in American fiction, a voice that instantly recalls the wry, knowing prose of Lorrie Moore crossed with the screwball talents of the cartoonist Roz Chast." --Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times"Any woman who's ever found herself looking at her life and wondering how on earth she wound up there will relate to the characters in this funny, honest novel." --Jodi Picoult, author of Nineteen Minutes "Fox gives us an all-too-real glance into what most married people have at one time or another wondered about (if not acted upon): the thrill-ride of illicit love. Emily's first-person narrative may be laugh-out-loud funny, but it's also an honest, compassionate look at the heartbreak of misplaced intimacy." --Amy Woods Butler, St. Louis Post-Dispatch"Read Still Life with Husband for its funny, winning voice and an ending that could be debated by book clubs for months to come."

. HTML:Meet Emily Ross, thirty years old, married to her college sweetheart, and personal advocate for cake at breakfast time.

Even though this is against everything I believe in, I found the book enjoyable enough to finish it. I kept thinking that Emily Ross made so many poor decisions along the way to having an affair, but I suppose this is the way is done. No one would make a right decision to have an affair, of course!! The ending was not what I expected and I won't go into that, as it would spoil it for anyone reading the book. this is not your normal plot of a romance, or an affair gone wrong. It is well written and I read it in one sitting, to see just how stupid or silly Ms. Ross was in her endeavor to find herself. and as in all affairs, there were no winners. I recommend this book for those who tolerate such reality and this especially would be a good beach book for the summer. Happy reading. ( )

I could not wait to finish this book. Emily, the narrator, has one view: her own. True, she does think about others' feelings and has some remorse, but it doesn't stop her from doing what she wants anyway. She is married to a wonderful man, but she is still unsatisfied. When her best friend miscarries, she is a little bit delighted. When she meets a man and begins an affair with him, she is ecstatic. As if this wasn't enough, she gets pregnant and has no idea who the father is. I couldn't stand her.

Some characters are just plain rotten but fun to read. Emily, on the other hand, is rotten but excruciating. She knows so little about her own wretchedness that reading her thoughts made me want to scream. It's not that she was a bad person; it's that she was so shallow. "I want, I want, I want" is Emily, with no regard for the havoc her behaviors wreak in the lives of those she supposedly loves. And to top it all off, she somehow puts on the airs that it wasn't even her fault. When her husband left her, pregnant and alone, I couldn't help but cheer.

An excellent book. Normally if I pick up a chick lit book and the publisher's blurb tells me it's funny, I put it straight down again. I can't remember what this book has on its back cover, but it *is* humorous - I laughed out loud while reading in public places. And yet the underlying message is serious enough and realistic enough that it goes right to the heart...of this reader, at least. Marital infidelity is the primary theme, as told through a woman's eyes. Despite me not being a woman, the narrator feels the things I would feel, and I suspect she's perceptive enough to discover the 'universal' truth of a given situation. This is apparently her first novel - I'll be watching out for more. ( )

I really enjoyed this book! I would've given it four stars but I did not like the ending. I like things to be all neat and tidy at the end. I had more questions than answers. ( )

Still Life with Husband is the story of Emily, a homely "good girl" who's used to her best friend getting all the attention. But when handsome David approaches her in a coffee shop, ignoring her best friend...she's gone. And she happens not to be wearing her wedding ring.

The roller coaster of a plot kept me glued to the book and I finished it in a day. Despite the changes in the narrator's life, I felt the novel
ended positively, and there was a wry humor throughout that leavened the story's events. ( )
