It had too much detail on insignificant items and little detail on more important and pertinent items ( )Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. What gives this away as well researched amateur history is the attempt by the author to fill the gaps in his interpretive and analytical skills with the sheer volume of information. The only real problem with that is the reader is left to determine for himself or herself the significance of all this information. Without any guidance from the author, besides his deep interest in the subject, we readers are left to wonder what he thinks the point of all of this is.Because of the interpretive weakness, it would be inaccurate to say Calarco's book is an interesting read. It is pretty dry stuff. But if you are looking for a place to start an investigation of the Underground Railroad, then you have found it. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This is a nicely done niche interest history, very suitable if you're looking to research into the underground railroad in general even if it does focus on one particular region. If it's local facts and figures you're looking for, there are plenty of names and locations to spark further research. Well written and copiously supplied with useful images. While he remarks that there is much left to be discovered in parts of this region, he provides an exhaustive account of the information he has gathered in relation to anti-slavery figures and conductors on the Underground Railroad. Maps of the different counties with highlighted towns/houses of probable stops are throughout the book; as someone who is not completely familiar with this region, they were really helpful for me to visualize the distances between towns and other points of interest. This is definitely a region that is not much discussed in Underground Railroad histories, and it was wonderful to add another piece to what I have read on the subject. Calarco does really well in outlining locations - either probable or possible, depending upon the amount of documented or circumstantial evidence available to each location. A good read for anyone interested in the Underground Railroad or the antebellum period! Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This book offers a focused study on the Underground Railroad in the Adirondack region of New York. For those not familiar with the Underground Railroad, this might not be the book to start off with, but for those looking to learn more about this fascinating topic, it is well worth the read. Calarco touches on the formation of abolitionism and the underground railroad, drawing on primary documents and local lore. He also maps out possible operators and stations along the Underground Railroad in northern New York. His book may also be a useful tool for those looking to do research on the underground railroad in this region, or others. Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I would recommend it for anyone with an interest in the Underground Railroad and the antebellum period. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
The success of the Underground Railroad depended on the participation of sympathizers in hundreds of areas throughout the country, each operating independently. Each area was distinctive both geographically and societally. This work focuses on the contributions of people in the Adirondack region, including their collaboration with operatives from Albany to New York City. With more than 10 years of research, the author has been able to take what for years in northern New York was considered akin to legend and transform it into history. Abolitionist newspapers--such as Friend of Man, Liberator, Pennsylvania Freeman, Emancipator, National Anti-Slavery Standard, and the little known Albany Patriot--that were published weekly from 1841 to 1848, as well as materials from local archives, were utilized. The book has extensive maps, photographs and appendices; key contributors to the cause are identified, abolition meetings and conventions are described, and maps of the Underground Railroad stations by county are provided.
