"The World's Rarest Birds", published by WILDGuides in the UK and Princeton UP in the US, is out in March. On the basis of more recent research by BirdLife International for the 2012 IUCN Red List, there are now 197 Critically Endangered species (including Possibly Extinct and Possibly Extinct in the Wild), 389 Endangered and 60 Data Deficient bird species, as well as the 4 species now Extinct in the Wild. All of these are covered by the book. The 731 remaining bird species of conservation concern - those classified as Vulnerable - are not covered.

Review copies of the book have been circulating and it looks pretty impressive! The official publication date is 3 April. Profits go to BirdLife International's Preventing Extinctions Programme. Hopefully this will raise awareness of the state of the world's birds.
