Hello! I said I wasn't going to start until term was over, but I can't resist. The first two books I am using are from my studies, but I'm not joining them the way the university did . . .

1. Kiss of the Fur Queen (Tomson Highway), in which the Fur Queen character is a trickster . . .

2. Kappa Child (Hiromi Goto), also has a trickster character, this time it's a Japanese kappa. The kappa impregnates the main character.

3. the Midwich Cuckoos (John Wyndham), in which the women of Midwich are impregnated by aliens . . .

to be continued . . .

Okay, #3 The Midwich Cuckoos was a false lead, so I'm replacing it with a new book:

3. The Disappeared (Kim Echlin), like Kappa Child, has a major character who is Asian and living in Canada. In the Kappa Child it's Japanese immigrants in Alberta, in The Disappeared, it's a Cambodian musician living in Montreal.

4. The Sun Also Rises (E Hemingway), like The Disappeared, is written in clear, declarative sentences.

5. Disgrace, by JM Coetzee and The Sun Also Rises both have unlikable main characters who I have trouble relating to.
