Hi all,
I read a book when I was a child ( sometime in the early 80s ) about a a boy and girl who enter a magic world through the ruins af a castle. In this world they hitch a ride on a flying horese and use giant pieces of cutlery as weapons. I've no idea who wrote the book, who published it or what it was called. Does anyone remember what it was called?
Thanks,
Andrew

Possibly Steel Magic by Andre Norton or Red Moon, Black Mountain by Joy Chant?

I don't know what book this is, sorry, but I do know it is definitely not "Red Moon, Black Mountain" as suggested by poster #2. No giant cutlery or flying horses in that book. :-)

3: Oh well, it's a good book anyhow. ;)

Yes, quite an excellent one! Also the "prequel" - The Grey Mane of Morning.

Yes, set thousands of years before Red Moon and Black Mountain - it's actually even better written. It doesn't involve any children from our world - it is set entirely in the other universe. I highly recommend it.

I didn't like When Voiha Wakes as much; though perhaps I should re-read it.

Steel Magic as suggested above in #2; some older editions are called Gray magic instead.
It has been in print recently, I believe.
It's also part of the omnibus The Magic Books.

Thanks everyone, it was Steel magic. Although the title doesn't ring a bell the plot seems to eb the same
