Hello NorAm Continental Birders and Global Birders,

I am seeking to add to my teensy library of northern bird books. There may very well be a plethora of Alaskan titles out there as the Americans North of 60 outnumber us Canadians 10 to 1. I reside in the birder-impoverished NWT and look to a Northwest Territories/Nunuvut checklist covering 1/6 (!) of Canada's landmass, and breeding atlases published in the bordering province of Alberta and the adjacent Yukon Territory. I will be migrating myself, very soon 1000 km to the east and staying north of the Territorial border, to land on the shores of Hudson Bay. Guess I'll need to delve into Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec birding titles, maybe even Greenland, if there are any written in English.

So! did you ever wonder where all those birds migrating through North America disappear to, onto their distant breeding grounds? Far North bird publications do exist, most of which are printed by northerners or summer researchers. The following is an incomplete list of mostly obscure publications collected by an itinerant northern birder. ** are listed in my library, with the remainder probably not going to be listed by yours truly. Titles run from oldest to most recent. FYI the best title, by far, is last.

**The Land That Never Melts, Auyuittuq National Park
edited by Roger Wilson, (1976), Parks Canada, SC, 212 pg.
(worth having for its bird section alone, pg 139-182 with 20 pg of superb (: colour/color :) paintings by Jean-Luc Grondin)

Guide to the Birds of Alaska, by Robert H. Armstrong, (1980)
Alaska Northwest Publishing Co., SC, 309 pg, ISBN 0-88240-143-2

Birds of Nahanni National Park, Northwest Territories, by George W. Scotter et al,
(1985) Special Publ No 15, Saskatchewan Natural History Society, Regina SK,
SC booklet, 74 pg, no cataloguing #s.

Guide to Alaskan Seabirds, by Nancy E. Stromsen, (1989, 2nd ed)
Alaska Natural History Society, SC booklet, 44 pg, ISBN 0-9602876-4-7.

Birds of Swan Lake, Yukon, by Helmut Grunberg, (1994)
Keyline Graphic Design, Whitehorse YT, SC, 137 pg, ISBN 0-9698268-0-X.
(very detailed account of a birding locale outside Whitehorse YT, I will probably list this one)

Colonial Waterbirds of Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories: An Annotated Atlas,
by J. Sirois et al, (1995)
Occasional Paper No 89, Canadian Wildlife Service, Enviroment Canada, SC, 59 pg,
ISBN 0-662-23884-2.

All the Birds of North America, by Jack L. Griggs, (1997)
American Bird Conservancy's Field Guide, SC.
(A dog-eared, water-resistent field guide with an Arctic Bird (!) section, must replace as it is still me' fav' guide...)

Birds of Nunavut, a Checklist, by James M. Richards et al, (2002)
Birders Journal Publ. Inc. SC booklet, 21 pg, no cataloguing #s.

Field Guide to the Birds of the Mackenzie Delta, ed. by Mike Solomons (2002)
Aurora Research Institute, SC, 102 pg, ISBN 0-7708-0035-1.

**Birds of the Yukon Territory
edited by Pamela H.Sinclair et al (2003), UBC Press, HC, 595 pg.
(A superlative book showing the zeal and dedication of the professional founders of the Yukon Bird Club, who also publish a newsletter since 1993 and maintain a website. On a sidenote, an interesting big year blog of bicycling North America in 2007-08 by a Yukon family of three can be found at www.birdyear.com)

Any and all other titles from the roof of the world would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post! but this hobbyist's journey of discovery has been a decade in the making...

Cheers from a locale with a few months of bad skidooing weather or very intense birding,
