Read it around 2010, thought it was an Australian author like Paul Jennings but can’t find. From perspective of a girl who would be around 12-13, arrives home and her mother is missing so she looks for her. Encounters a young boy who is so bloated for a reason they don’t know, that he looks pregnant. He ends up releasing the gas which shoots out a blue marble and the gas kills all the insects in the area. They then go looking for her mother and find her in this weird place with weird characters, the mother had taken something so she is aging backwards and becomes a teenager and then a baby.
