First Grade 1970s Reading Phonics Curriculum? Teaches phonics with long story

Hello. Looking for the book/curriculum I was introduced to in first grade, 1976, to learn phonics. It was a long "story" that the teacher would read every day for what my memory thinks was weeks/months. It had a plot, and characters and the idea was for the "reader" to understand the sounds of the letters and how to sound them out as the story went on. The letters were not introduced in order. I know it's a long shot, would love to have to go over with my grandchildren- appreciate the help.

You're speaking to the entire world; which country were you in at the time? That might help to narrow it down.

I was in a Canadian first grade class a couple of years after that, but I don't recall a teaching tool like the one you describe. We had "readers": collections of short stories with very simple words that we read together.

Based in Massachusetts USA. It was a Catholic primary school... however, I think the story was secular.
