Fiction
Square paperback children’s book, vaguely painted art style
20-60 years old
Narrator is a young child, with a younger sister. One summer flying creatures appear, and after one comes in the sister’s room, she gets very sick. I realized several years after I read it that I think the whole thing’s a polio analogy - the sister gets the same sort of symptoms, and I think ends up with the muscle weakness problems afterwards.
I think the creatures had an invented name, but I’m not sure. They were brown and bat-like. They all suddenly left after a while.
It might have been called something like “the x that the x came” but I’m *really* not sure on that
I’ll add onto this if I manage to dredge up any more. Thanks!
