Nonfiction, fantasy book for young adults or teens. I read this book in jr high/early high school, which was 2009 ish. I believe the book was written late 90’s early 00’s.
The main character is a young man, a teenager I believe. His family owns a shoe making company. It’s set in a fantasy world (no dragons, but castles and kings and such). Basically, the main character goes to the docks to drop off some shoes or pick up supplies or something of that nature and in some way (I don’t remember how) he ends up on a ship sailing to another land. On this sailing journey, he sees an albatross which is a HUGE deal in the book and he gets a feather from the albatross. The sailors stress that this is a sign of good luck.
Eventually he makes his way to the other land. It’s a bustling kingdom. He finds himself staying at the Crossroads Inn, it’s located at a crossroads. One road leads to town, one road leads to no man’s land, and I don’t remember the other two roads destinations. Throughout the book he basically explores the kingdom befriending people. Towards the end, a friend exposes himself as the prince and offers to employ the main character as his spy; roaming among the people gathering a consensus of what’s wrong within the kingdom, where the prince should do better, etc. The ending is the main character accepting the job, and heading out on his travels.
I don’t believe the second book was available when I finished this first book. It was a childhood favorite I’m trying to get back in touch with. Any help is appreciated!!
