I was recently listening to my performance of this amazing piece of music and at the triumphant finale of the fourth movement, my CD had a dreadful skip. I was perusing ebay for a new performance of this piece and decided this could be a good topic for the group.

What performance of this piece have you come to really enjoy? and why?

I have a 1985 recording by the Vienna Philharmonic under Karajan on DG. This is not a recommendation. I learned to listen to big, main-stream, 19th.C., European symphonic works in the age of vinyl and have found it hard to move on from performances by big European orchestras under Karajan, Klemperer, Furtwangler and their like. Recording quality is, of course, much improved but I am too old and deaf to bother too much about that.

Can you access BBC Radio 3 Building a Library podcasts? You won't always agree with the participant's verdict but the programme is always interesting. They looked at Tchaikowsky's fifth a couple of years ago and recommended Mariss Jansons's recording with the Oslo Philharmonic on Chandos. It was available then as a download or as part of a complete set of Tchaikowsky symphonies. Another they recommended was a 1960 disc by the Leningrad PO under Evgeny Mravinsky. I see this has been remastered a few years ago and is on two CDs with the Fourth and Sixth.
