One does have to wonder what percentage of the Club’s members read even some of this work. It’s easy to imagine many of the novels being reasonably faithfully read, by contrast!

Love this book, although it has been problematical for me. I have two copies, both of which have the front hinge cracked and loose. I hesitate to get a third for fear of that one cracking as well. I should just repair the two I have.

Why do I have two? Well, one is an illustrator's copy, signed on the FFEP as well as the colophon, is unnumbered, and has the LEC embossed seal on the colophon page; the other is a regularly issued copy.

Highly underrated edition in my opinion (but I also collect nice modern printings of classics related to history, historiography, and chronicles, so it might have higher than average appeal to me).

Great paper, delightful page design, handy size for reading, dynamic illustrations that have an edge of modern graphic sensibility while still harmonizing with the traditional feel. The impression is far more luxurious in the hand than in digital pictures, so if you are on the fence keep an eye out for an opportunity to see it in person. The color palette reads as slightly—1970s?—to me, but this seems like more of a charming quirk than anything positive or negative.

Also... 1500 copies colored by hand? (!!!!!) This book has a lot of colored illustrations.

The only flaws are slightly weak hinges as noted by >3 Glacierman: (my copy is fine, but I can see the concern) and a tendency to have seen some sun on the spine (probably something about whatever blue was used to color the buckram). Still a tremendous deal at current secondary market prices, especially if you are more tempted by printing/interior than by binding/exterior. (And the binding is an excellent design, just has some minor durability issues as noted.)

I shudder to think about the cost of producing a volume like this in the current market given contemporary specialist labor and materials cost.

A magnificent production. I have a copy, in excellent shape, don't ever expect to read it except here and there. But love the printing, design and illustrations.
