I think its because of shadow of evil falling over the world and the church - God has to do something in response.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the title of this thread about signs in the sky was the rainbow, the original sign of God's covenant with God's people. "'And this', God said, 'is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and every living creature with you for all ages to come: I now set my bow in the clouds and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth'... 'That', God told Noah, 'is the sign of the covenant I have established between myself and all living things on earth'" (Genesis 9:11-17). That sign still appears regularly all over the world to remind us.

I find it interesting that this sign has also been used in non-religious settings, generally connected with inclusivity. South Africa's post-apartheid "rainbow nation", the New Zealand-registered Greenpeace ship "Rainbow Warrior" which was sunk in 1985 by the French government in an act of state-sponsored terrorism, the UN "Operation Rainbow" which tried (but unfortunately failed) to deliver humanitarian aid to war torn southern Sudan in 1986, the symbol of the LGBTQ+ pride movement, and more generally as a universal symbol of peace. Praise be to the God of the Covenant!
