I'm not wedded to it, but Sonya, Abby and I all thought it was heading in an okay direction.

Incidentally, we played a lot with solid, darker top colors. (At one time Abby was in love with Cork'd.) We couldn't get anything that looked good.

It seems I was viewing the page as other links were being added. Somehow, my login name was listed with a style I didn't create. This is an interesting idea, but maybe tomorrow. .

Hmmm... Okay. I know why. The problem is fixed.

I like the new look for the tabs, but I'm not convinced about the pale background colour across the top. It's somehow unsettling and looks as thought the page hasn't loaded properly or something.

Working on the well-known saying "If it ain't broken, don't mend it" I vote for leaving it as it is. There are a lot more important things to deal with.(which I'm sure that I need not enumerate)

Are you ready to throw everything to a vote? What if timspalding-5 wins? (Ah, my eyes!)

If it wins, hopefully that's a good sign for Steven Moffat's "Blink" winning the Hugo like it deserves to. *grins*

What devenish said (#5).

Ditto #5. I do like the rounded tabs though.

I don't like the very soft color, but I love the rounded tabs. Could you get them in the default design?

>11 royalhistorian:

The rounded tabs only show up on certain browsers, unfortunately. The more modern browsers allow you to do this with a line or two of CSS. On older ones you can only do rounding through laborious insertion of tiny images, loading which takes time and adds sparkly distraction.

Just an FYI, the rounded tabs don't show up in IE7 either, even though you probably consider it a "modern browser." It looks nice in Firefox though!

I'm not entirely sure IE7 counts as "modern browser".

True, but from a development standpoint, it's better than IE6...

Do people prefer the sub-nav here?

http://www.librarything.com/profile/timspalding&viewstyle=timspalding-1

I really want to go with something trimmer, like that.

18timspalding
Mar 14, 2008, 6:44 pm

No, it's that the subnav is spaced differently, has no shadow, etc. There was this big uproar about how the subnav looked terrible before :)

19rebeccanyc
Mar 14, 2008, 7:32 pm

Maybe I'm blind, but the subnav doesn't look all that different to me!

20timspalding
Mar 14, 2008, 8:58 pm

Good. I like it better, and if you can't tell the difference—and nobody is piping up—well, it's a done-deal :)

I rather like the shadow but there's not enough difference to get bent out of shape over.

22timspalding
Mar 14, 2008, 9:10 pm

Good. I'm gun-shy. I'm worried that half the site will leave if I move the line up a pixel, and the other half won't stay unless I do it. :)

Oooh! Very nice, markbarnes. Keep designing. Your ideas for redesign are very appealing. The only thing about your designs, though, is that I find the brown font hard to take. Could you tweak it with black font?

(At least in FF. IE6 leaves something to be desired.)

You're excellent.

My problem with designs like that, however, is that the tabs aren't tabs anymore. Krug has a thing about this, and so do I. But I see the idea.

The good thing about the Cork'd example is how it gives a spacious feel without *having* to leave the edges clear. I'm cool with it on some pages, but I think if we decided to limit the width of the "your library" page to 740 pixels, there would be a coup.

>25 Morphidae:
Let's compromise: one pixel.

>26 timspalding:

I agree with you about the tabs. I was just trying to replicate Cork'd. I'd prefer the currently selected tab to be the same colour as the background of the current page. I've done something like this on profile page.

I agree with you about the my library width. All we need is a class on body which identifies the page... ;-)

28markbarnes
Mar 15, 2008, 10:32 am

This is exactly the same, but as tabs as you like them. Doesn't work properly on pages with subnav though. That would need another CSS class.

Having looked at what everyone's added, I can only say, "Why?" None are as good as the original. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

32ATimson
Mar 15, 2008, 12:04 pm

The original's pretty good, I'll admit; I only shrunk the header because I like to get every pixel of real estate I can. And I think rounded tabs look nifty. =D

(I know that the logo on mine is naff, but I didn't like the original resized to fit the new height, and just leaving it out entirely seemed wrong. It also helps to correct the tab inbalance; "LibraryThing" is centered, but "beta" hangs off to the right, eating up some of that excess space.)

I like the tabs in timspalding-1, but I really can't stand the lightness of the main colour at the top.

34timspalding
Mar 15, 2008, 6:41 pm

Hmm...

35flabuckeye
Mar 15, 2008, 10:55 pm

So why cut the sides off. With a small screen every little bit helps. Just a waste. At least if you want a change for no real reason, let some of us keep what we have. As showing with the brown background, the sign out is almost gone on the right and "your library" is almost gone on the left.

36mvrdrk
Mar 17, 2008, 8:30 pm

LOL! I was going to say I adore the lightness of timspalding-1. It's easy on my presbyopia.

37_Zoe_
Mar 17, 2008, 9:59 pm

Hah!

I think it's probably because of the colours looking different on different screens. I don't object to lightness in general, but depending on the angle of my screen, it's sometimes almost white.

And now the tabs look different for some reason (possible a different angle again, but I also wasn't seeing the rounded corners before), and I don't like it as much.

I like the rounded tabs too. The two things that have really bugged me about the original design, though, are the LibraryThing logo and the color scheme. The font in the logo is odd and makes the site look sloppy. And, as far as the color scheme goes, why pink? I don't like the pink at all. How about a nice simple navy blue with clean white writing?
