This was cross-posted to Book Talk because I'm still figuring out this site. I apologize if that's bad form.

I've just finished reading Beowulf for my English Epic class and something's been bugging me. Looting is clearly part of the culture in Beowulf, but when Beowulf defeats Grendel's mother, he doesn't loot her hoard. I understand why with the dragon hoard - it's cursed and they burn it with Beowulf's body. That makes sense. But he's presented with an entire hoard of monster treasure, including treasure with apparently fantastic powers from a bygone age and he doesn't take anything from it except the hilt of the sword he used to defeat Grendel's mother.

The only explanation I can think of is that it's underwater and would be hard to bring to the surface but this is Beowulf. He does the impossible. Any ideas about what's going on here?
