Hello, all! I'm in the process of getting all of the books in our small meeting library added here on librarything. I'm about to embark on a redo of our library's cataloging system and I'd love to know how you all do it in your meetings.

Right now our library is cataloged using a homebrewed system with several book categories, including:
FOH: Foundations and history
FAP: Faith and Practice
BIO: Biographies and Journals
SLC: Spiritual Life and Community
PAZ: Peace
TSC: Testimonies and Social Concerns
QPE: Quaker Process and Education
LIA: Literature and Arts
THE: Theology
FDS: First Day School
PHP: Pendle Hill Pamphlets

One problem now is that books don't have any call numbers or coding.

This system was lovingly created by a former meeting attender long ago, and there's evidence of lots of work put into it in the form of now-useless floppy disks containing the old database. I could switch to Dewey Decimal system, but my main concerns with the re-do are 1) That books be presented in a way that encourages people to find what they need, and 2) To create a SIMPLE system that can be easily picked up on when I'm gone, instead of ending up as whatever the 201X equivalent of dusty floppy disks will be.

So - how do y'all do your catalogs? Any good resources on using Dewey Decimal Numbers to set up a meeting library? Any alternative classification systems, and if so, how do you do your call numbers?

Thanks,

Colin

Hello Colin

Sorry to have left your message unanswered so long. I did send you a message to your own Comment Wall. (Look at the right side of the brown LT bar. Next to your name saquakers is a box with a number in it. Click on that box and you'll go to your Comment Wall.)

If you look at VicRML's collections (www.librarything.com/catalog/VicRML) that will give you a start on how we group books. Our cataloguing is far from finished, and sporadically I find ways to rearrange some bits to be internally more consistent or to meet new requirements.

Our library shelving order is almost an alphabetical list of collections. The main exception is J - younger people. It's at the physical start of our shelving because that is where the doorway leading to the children's room is.

If you email me at quakerfh@bigpond.com I could send you the spreadsheet of collections and rationale for them - as they stand now. I feel a change coming with spring just a month away... ;-)

Blessings,
Bevianne

PS I notice you have fewer than 200 books on LT. Is that your entire library?
