I've read only one, Warlight. I'm on the library waiting list for Washington Black. I just saw the news that it won the Giller Prize.

I'm going to feel so hipster-y in 2019. There are six titles* I'm reading for my book clubs. I've already read An American Marriage and The Book of M; there are three titles ** I'm interested in.

* Titles to be read in 2019:

Circe
The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock
A River of Stars
There There
Warlight
Where the Crawdads Sing

** Titles of interest in 2019:
Girls Burn Brighter
My Sister the Serial Killer
Red Clocks

The number of long list books that I've read grows each year. Whether my tastes are changing to conform to the ToB or the ToB is bending to my will is a mystery. (Probably a lot of it has to do with the Summer Reading Challenge.) When the long list was announced, I had read:

An American Marriage
Census
Circe
Florida
The Friend
The House of Broken Angels
How to be Safe
The Italian Teacher
Kudos
The Mars Room
My Year of Rest and Relaxation
The Parking Lot Attendant
The Perfect Nanny
Red Clocks
Some Trick
Sunburn
Transcription
The Witch Elm

And I was coincidentally reading Ohio and There There. I'm now reading The Book of M and The Incendiaries (which is wonderful).

I'm looking forward to January, when the competitors will be announced, and when I will discover that only a couple of books I've read are in the Tournament.

>5 RidgewayGirl:, I think it is that reading tastes do change as a person get exposures to these long list books.

So I've been reading books from the long list for the last couple weeks, and I find myself getting more and more excited for the shortlist in January and the tournament in March.

Anyone got recommendations for things on the longlist that are must-reads even if they don't end up being rooster contenders? I find that now I read the descriptions of the longlist books and end up reading a bunch of them each December, but I don't have a great record being good at picking the ones that end up making the shortlist.

I think that this year's must reads are There There and An American Marriage, but that's one woman's opinion based only on the books she's read. Washington Black may also be one and I hope to read it soon.
