Mark Obmascik's book "The Big Year" remains a cherished item in the "bird" section of my personal library. It begins as Sandy Komito (of Attu Island, Alaska birding fame) plots his strategy while sitting in a Denny's Restaurant in Nogales, Arizona, about 40 miles south of where we live.

Frahealee: There are many articles available online that detail the worrisome decline of bird populations worldwide. This is largely attributable to habitat loss, but other factors are involved.

Competition drives some birders to keep and post their lists on sites such as E-bird. Others simply enjoy the personal satisfaction of keeping a tally.
