Hi Everyone,

I am new to this so I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a mother of an 9 year old with ASD. I am also studying to be a librarian at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. I was president of our local chapter of Autism Ontario and I select all the titles for our lending library.

I do not have any of the titles I have read so far in my library (plan to do this over the Christmas holidays), but I would like to comment on three excellent books my son and I have read together.

These 3 are for children just learning about their autism:

Different like me by Jennifer Elder is a book which introduces children ages 8-12 about inspirational famous and historical figures in a variety of subject areas all thought to have autism.

Baj and the Word Launcher- Pamela Victor- is a novel about a boy named Baj that has a magic cloak to calm him down and a word launcher to help him say the right things in situations. My son really related to this novel.

Autism, what does it mean to me? Catherine Flaherty- is a handbook to teach individuals about their autism. It is wonderfully written and can be done by a parent and a child doing a module a week.

I am very excited to join this group and look forward to the wonderful exchange of dialogue and ideas on books related to autism.

Cheers

Welcome, cvespa!
Thanks for letting me know about the new books - I'm not familiar with them, and I'd like to tell my friend the special ed teacher about them. Do you know the book Ian's Walk by Laurie Lears? It's an excellent picture book that would be good for any audience, I think, but seems to be directed toward siblings of kids on the spectrum.
