I read this maybe 30 years ago. It featured a future society where kids could go back in time as observers and see historic events take place, their consciousness hanging out in the brains of people in the past. The book opens on "Experience Day." The main character and her best friend get to experience sex for the first time vicariously.
The main character and her best friend grow up. They really enjoy this passive time travel and decide to become historians so they can keep visiting the past. The main character realizes that she can actually take control of her host's body when the host loses consciousness.
