If Griphook stole the sword at Gringots, how could Neville have taken it out of the Sorting Hat in order to slice Nagini's head off...can anyone be of help?

How did it come out of the hat in Chamber of Secrets?
Magic. :-) GG put some of himself into the hat, so I guess it can "accio" the sword when needed by a worthy Griffindor.

Basically, the Sorting Hat has magic that trumps Griphook's claim.
I like how the hat is yet another thing that Voldemort underestimates.

Sure, the sword comes out of the Hat. But it's not as if Neville is walking around with the Sorting Hat in the heat of battle, and I can't imagine that his first thought after Harry told him to kill the snake was "Uh oh, I need a weapon. I better look in the Sorting Hat!" Especially since Harry explained that Nagini needed to be killed, but he didn't explain that an unusually powerful weapon would be necessary. I thought this was a big plot hole and it left me very confused in the wee hours of the morning.

Neville needed a weapon because Voldy was trying to kill him. Voldy waved his wand & summoned the Hat from the Headmaster's office, then shoved it on Neville's head & set it on fire. All hell broke loose just at that point, and Neville got the hat off, and pulled out the sword. (pages 732-733)

Because the sword is magic and would come to the aid of anyone (or any Gryffindor) who needed help at Hogwarts and asked for it. Remember when Harry got it down in the Chamber of Secrets? He drew it out just like Neville did in this book. I admit, that was a clunky bit of writing there, but I think we were always supposed to know that Griphook was never going to be master of that sword. :)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same thing here as in harry potter and the chamber of secrets. it's not like the sword was "actually" in the hat at the end of Book 2, yet Harry was able to pull it out because of the sneakiness of Gryffindor's hat. It's his hat; it wouldn't be surprising if Gryffindor had done something so that he could whip out the sword wherever he happened to be.

#4 - The sword would've been obvious! It probably clunked his head as it did Harry's, in book 2. Your version of events is funnier, though.

Couldn't it be something like a special spell so that it was accessible through the Sorting hat when a Gryffindor was in need? You know like the spell that made the flying car expandable or the chest that held Mad Eye Moody in Goblet of Fire?
