J.D. Salinger short stories collection was published in the United States as Nine Stories, while in the UK it was published under the title For Esmé with Love and Squalor, which is also the title of one of the stories in this collection.

Some of the stories in this collection deal with the same characters that also appear in Salinger's other work.

Wow, this is a blast from the past! I almost posted that we aren't doing Salinger this year and then I realized he was a theme reads author from before I joined the group!

I looked back, and saw that not much was done with Salinger back in 2009. Then, two threads were created for general information about the author and his work, of which Looking forward to Salinger contained the most and most interesting information. But even in 2009, there was only one thread to discuss Salinger's work, and only for The Cather in the Rye.

In November / December, I read Franny and Zooey and For Esmé with Love and Squalor, and am now planning to read the other short works in January.

It is a good alternative read and might interest quite a few people, and since we are doing "authors from the past" till we figure out what else to do...

(I think we should be able to go on with authors anyway. I definitely need more time to get started on Zola.
