I'm not sure if anyone on LT has started a thread on Madiba's death, but I just felt it should be acknowledged. I put it in the "Let's Talk Religion" group because his life embodied many of the values which are central to religion, including personal transformation, peace, justice, healing and reconciliation (and before anybody jumps in, I am not implying that those values are exclusive to religion).

People in South Sudan identify with the anti-apartheid struggle, and with Mandela's example of reconciliation and healing. Our President has gone to South Africa for the memorial service today. I was facilitating a meeting of South Sudan's national healing and reconciliation committee in a peace village deep in the bush when we got the news last week over a shaky satellite internet connection (no phone network there). We had a South African priest with us as one of the facilitators, and Mandela's death really struck us in the context of the healing and reconciliation work we are doing. The local tribe, the Toposa, who have hardly been touched by outside influences, composed a song in Mandela's honour, while our South African colleague wrote a very moving poem.

A truly outstanding figure. RIP.

I thought Barack Obama's address at Mandela's memorial service today was rather good. I happened to catch most of it live on BBC radio. Full text is here.
