I have a strong attachment to "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72," which I believe is one of the best books ever written about American politics. "Las Vegas" is a classic of course. What are your preferences and why?

'72 was the first one I read - my High School library had it - so I have a soft spot for that one.

My order would probably be Vegas, '72, Lono, Rum Diary. I love Steadman's stuff in Lono - without the illustrations, Rum Diary would probably move up one.

I can’t say that Thompson’s written anything I hate, so, everything.

Specifically, The Rum Diary is my favorite Thompson book, and one of my all-time favorite books in general. I have read it twice, and am thinking about giving it a third read soon.

Vegas, is, of course, and without a doubt, a classic, and belongs on the list. And I agree with coffeezombie that Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is, by far, one of the best books on American politics.

One of my favorite things of his to read though are his “press releases.” Ha! I would like to see someone publish a collection of them.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail changed my whole life.

But everything he ever wrote is perfect. EVERYTHING.

I do love his collected letters.

The Rum Diary is my favourite Thompson, but they're all works of genius IMHO.
