My library began to develop during undergraduate studies at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg PA (1962-66), it developed further during study Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart IN (1966-69, at Columbia University and New York Theological Seminary (1969-70), during nine years of teaching at Sekolah Tinggi Wiyata Wacana in Pati, Indonesia (1970-79), then ThM and PhD study at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA (1980-83), and finally thirty years as John Coffman Professor of Missiology at Eastern Mennonite Seminary of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia (1983-2014). Besides English there are books written in Indonesian language, Javanese, Netherlands Dutch and German.

My childhood years were in Lancaster County and York County Pennsylvania. My undergraduate studies were at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Then I earned an M.Div. degree as Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart Indiana. In preparation for alternate to military service in Indonesia, I studied Indonesian language at Columbia University in New York and Asian historiography and Church History at New York Theological Seminary. My wife Shirlee and I served nine years of teaching at Sekolah Tinggi Wiyata Wacana in Pati, Indonesia where I also did work in agricultural and economic development. While in Indonesia I wrote Benih Yang Tumbuh, The Muria Story, and with Drs Sigit Heru Sukoco I wrote Tata Injil di Bumi Muria and The Way of the Gospel in the World of Java.Then I studied three years at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California to obtain MTh and PhD degrees there. My dissertation title was The Introduction and Expression of Islam and Christianity in the Cultural Context of North Central Java. Beginning in 1983 I spent thirty years as John S. Coffman Professor of Missiology at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, a graduate division of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
