Most of my current library is on my phone because it is always with me. I read very few traditionally published writers these days as I focus more on other independents I meet at the Cons throughout the year. Also, there is a heavy skew towards books on writing, publishing, and advertising or getting the word out there and finding readers who become fans and evangelize my books.

For those who are writers, I keep my life as automatic as possible. My paperbacks are only through the grandfather of them all: Ingram's. My e-books are mostly through Draft2Digital and are all available through local libraries. I grew up in libraries and will always be a staunch supporter of public libraries.

I went from photojournalism (short-form writing) to long-form at age fifty-six and am writing my next career. My favorite place to write is on the fan tail of a five-masted sailing ship, in the middle of the Atlantic, at the crack of dawn.

In his works, Baer Charlton often focuses on the “underdog”. He has received high praise for his ability to tell stories, offering insight into the lives of those usually marginalized or ignored. His stories feature realistic details, vibrant characters, and a delicate yet powerful approach to the social issues that are common themes throughout his books. His works span the spectrum from light cozy mysteries to darker suspense novels, and he always entertains as he reveals the other sides of life.

Speaking of dogs, Charlton always includes animals in his novels. “Our lives are richer for having animals in our lives.” Cats don’t always need to be saved, but a cat in the lap says more about a protagonist than even a photo or a thousand words can convey.

His works also include powerful females, members of the LGBTQ community, and other historically marginalized characters. “Because they have always been in my life. And they still are.”

His new series, Nash Running Bear Mysteries, is about a female FBI agent. She is a Paiute Indian attached to the Special Operation as a Special Investigator. Her K-9 partner is a cattle dog and hound mix named Powder. Both bring extra to the investigations.
