Yu Guangzhong was born in Nanjing, China on October 21, 1928. He and his family left mainland China for Taiwan after the Nationalists were defeated by the Communists in the Chinese Civil War in 1949. He graduated from National Taiwan University in 1952. His first collection of poetry, Elegy of a afficher plus Boatman, was published in 1952. In 1957, he published Chinese translations of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and Irving Stone's Lust for Life. He graduated from the University of Iowa's acclaimed creative writing program in 1959. He taught Chinese literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for 11 years beginning in 1975 and then taught Western literature at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung for 32 years until his death. He published more than 50 books of poetry, prose, criticism, and translations over seven decades including Nostalgia. He died from respiratory failure on December 14, 2017 at the age of 89.
