I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. I have gotten to know the author over the past year through Twitter and his YouTube channel. I know he is articulate and knowledgeable, especially about college football. My hesitancy with this book is my own contradicting feelings and opinions regarding guns (I am a white woman born, raised and living in a very red state in a family of hunters who believes in the 2nd Amendment & also ugly cries every time an innocent life is lost to gun violence). Young's personal story about his journey as a young back man with guns is eloquent and visceral...and very familiar. I know most of the Oklahoma landmarks and locations mentioned in the book. I grew up in the Tulsa area hearing stories (from my family not teachers) about the Tulsa Race Riot and very aware of racial tensions and prejudices that exist here. I couldn't help but wonder how I would feel about this story if I didn't already know and respect its teller. This book is something that will stick with me for a very long time. Not only is it a book that has me questioning my own beliefs and assumptions, but it is very well-written. I listened to this on audiobook, and I felt like I was sitting down to hear a friend tell their story. I will be recommending this book to everyone I know (and will be gifting to many). As an added bonus, there are several literary references peppered throughout to amuse the literati. Well done, RJ.… (plus d'informations)
