This book caught my attention when I read the synopsis from the back cover but it ended up being a bit disappointing. First, I had a very hard time getting into this book because of so much information being thrown at the reader in the first few chapters. Eventually, the pace slowed down.
On the other hand, I liked Ellis’s stubborn and strong personality as a healer because it gave an interesting perspective to the time era. I also liked all of Ellis's references to Psalm 91.
I have to admit that near the end of the story, I could not put the book down and the epilogue was amazing. It cleared up a lot of questions that I had and also had a plot twist.
The Alamo Bride can be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend reading the earlier books in the series to get a better understanding.

A historical whirlwind romantic suspense!

This fast paced story with a horrific beginning is one I am glad to say, I love.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

've liked all the books in this Gone to the Dogs series. I found them to be heartwarming, entertaining and fun. This installment is no different. I was particularly impressed by the section of the story where a missing military working dog was brought into the storyline. I liked how there was a conundrum to solve. I liked how the author talked about PTSD and how Air Force veteran Dr. Lane Bishop received unexpected healing from the military working dog. Their bond grew. It turned Lane’s life around.

Nora Hernandez, who is occupied with running her restaurant and getting ready to launch an antiques store, is the second important character. When a tornado strikes Brenham, things start to get a little crazy for her and the community. The downtown area is severely damaged. When a second explosion rocks Brenham, things get suspenseful. This event brings Lane and Nora closer. They had been dating for some time now. Due to Lane’s PTSD issues, which he has never been willing to discuss with Nora; their relationship has been strained. Since Lane started taking care of this military dog, he feels more at ease. Is there any connection between that and the military's training of dogs?

The author’s love of animals’ shines through the entire series. It left an impression on me. This story has a delightful ending. This makes for fun escape and one that would work well for your next book club pick.

This series, with its various pets, has been very enjoyable and the dog in this book may be my favorite pet yet! Pal is a military working dog in need of a home and much of the plot of New Leash on Life deals with finding Pal a new master and witnessing the on-again, off-again romance between Nora and Lane. There's also a tornado, some unexplained fires, and illegal activity brewing in Brenham. What else can possibly happen in this small Texas town that we've come to love?

This is the sixth book in the Gone to the Dogs series, and the books just keep getting better. Cozy mystery fans will appreciate this well-written story with its likable characters, clean romance, and just enough intrigue to keep them guessing. I recommend New Leash on Life to all who enjoy contemporary Christian fiction.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

I loved reading this story about two people who work long hours and want to get married but have secrets that they are not talking about. I really liked Nora and Lane and Pal. I enjoyed learning some about MWD dogs. I liked the romance and the bits of suspense. I received a copy of this book from the publisher for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

New Leash on Life Kathleen Y’Barbo is a Christian Fiction / Cozy Mystery. This book is the sixth book in the Gone to the Dogs series. Dr. Lane Bishop and Nora Hernandez take the lead in this story, but the rest of your favorite characters from earlier books still appear in this book.

Air Force veteran Dr. Lane Bishop and Nora Hernandez’s romance is slowing down. Working as a researcher at a vet school and caring for his father occupies Dr. Lane Bishop’s time. Nora finds herself trying to decide if pursuing a relationship with Lane is worth it or not.

With a tornado, explosions, and a mysterious dog that appears, a lot happens in this story. I loved how the author developed the characters and storylines. The suspense, twists and turns, and the relationship between Lane and Nora develop. I found myself unable to put this book down.

While you could read this book on its own, I definitely recommend reading the entire series so you can appreciate the storyline and get to know the major characters. So, if you enjoy stories involving dogs, prior military servicemembers, families, romance, friendship, and more, check out this book and the entire series for yourself.

So, if you enjoy Christian fiction and cozy mysteries, check out this book and the rest of the series for yourself. I definitely recommend this book and the rest of the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

“Son, I have had arthritic hound dogs that move faster than you.”

I love these Gone to the Dog cozies! This one, by Kathleen Y’Barbo, called New Lease on Life, deals with MWD (military working dogs).

It would be hard not to like Nora, who has been waiting half of forever for her boyfriend to propose, or Lane, said boyfriend who refuses to propose for reasons he’s ashamed to admit. Of course, the scene stealer in this book is the beautiful Belgian Malinois, Pal, who has special abilities. Not only does he hint at problems, but he recognizes immediately when a person like Lane needs him most, and springs into action.

Suspects run rampant in this episode, and it was with relief that I reached the end of the somewhat complicated crime(s). Bravo, Ms. Y’Barbo, for sending the reader on such an extended hunt to find the culprits!

I loved to find that characters from previous stories were included, and we get to see even more of their lives. I especially loved the inclusion of Bitsy in this story. I sure hope that things calm down soon in Brenham… or maybe not, I’d love more Gone to the Dog stories!

I received a copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit via NetGalley. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

If you haven’t read the first books in this series, stop everything you are doing and go read them. That way you become friends with the people in this quaint little town. Each character has a reason to be in the story and they enhance each other. I loved getting back to the town and getting caught up with all the people. I adored the setting and how much the community helps each other out.

This book focuses on Nora and Lane. These two have danced around a serious relationship for too long. Now it is time for one of them to step up and get this romance serious and moving forward. The author does give us quite a bit of information about them. I did like their story but some I think could have been left out.

The town is threatened by severe weather that has everyone on pins and needles. If you haven’t been in a tornado before, it not something you ever want to experience. As Lane and Nora figure out where they are going with each others there is also a mystery going on. The dog in the story was a highly trained dog and I really wanted to read more about him.

With everything going on in the book, I think it fell a little short on the cozy mystery feeling. There was too much focus on would Lane and Nora ever get together. It was a fun read but just missed the mark a little for me.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit . The review is my own opinion.

NEW LEASH ON LIFE (GONE TO THE DOGS SERIES BOOK 6)
by Kathleen Y'Barbo

I don't know what it was about this book, but I was immediately drawn to it, I was unable to put it down and read it straight through. I think the subject matter was the draw. Highly recommend.

Nora Hernandez owns a farm-to-table restaurant, that has been her life's dream. She recently purchased an antique shop next door to the restaurant and is patiently waiting for her boyfriend Lane Bishop, DVM to propose.

A mysterious runaway dog suddenly appears, Lane is able to catch the animal and thinks it is a MWD, or Military War Dog. The dog has been highly trained, he is sure that it belongs somewhere. He checks the dog over at the Lone Star Veterinary Clinic, where he's temporarily helping out.

These are sweet, inspirational, mystery, and romance books. I have read several, but this one drew my interest the most.

I received a complimentary copy of #NewLeashOnLife from #BarbourPublishing I was not obligated to post a review.

Twelve-year-old Maribel Cordova, daughter of a Spaniard with a questionable background, is brought by her father on a voyage across the ocean. When their ship is accosted by a privateer ship helmed by the infamous captain Jean Beaumont, Maribel decides she wants to be a privateer too. But Beaumont's ship is not destined to remain unhindered, and Maribel is left with only her memories of her time on the ship until years later, when a series of events lead to a chance encounter between Maribel and the captain.

There was a lot going on in this book, which proved to be its downfall. I was really into the first part. Maribel reminded me of Anne from Anne of Green Gables, and I appreciated the friendships she so quickly cultivated. Several of the smaller side characters I really liked all the way through the story. However, it was difficult to see the captain in a sort of fatherly capacity to her, knowing that this is a romance story, and that based on the (just utterly terrible and confusing) synopsis of the book, this 12-year-old girl and the 20-something captain are going to end up falling in love by the end of the book.

Still, the captain was interesting, and I was curious to see how it would all play out. But then in part 2, we have developments in the captain's life and developments in Maribel's life that sort of coincide, but not really, and that end up bloating the story far too much. I think the book would have been better overall if the captain's side of things was the focus. Add to that the lackluster development of romantic feelings between the two main characters, and the feeling I was left with at the end of this book was..."meh." I did like it more than the previous one in the series, but I'm still hoping for better in the books to come.

Pinkerton detective Alice Anne, great-granddaughter to Queen Victoria, investigated a series of murders in Austin, Texas in 1884, along with her partner Isaiah Joplin. The perpetrator was never caught, but the pair team up four years later to try to solve a similar series of murder in the Whitechapel district of London. Are the killers the same, and will a culprit be caught for either case?

I think the biggest issue with this book was in the subject matter. Each of the books in the True Colors series focuses on a different true crime from history, with real historical facts melded with fictional characters and situations. The difficulty, though, is in making an interesting, fulfilling story out of a crime that was never solved, as is the case with the real murders this book is set around. While I understand the author’s desire not to make up a conclusion that didn’t really happen, I think I would have preferred fictionalized closure to the “we really don’t know anything,” hemming & hawing mess this book devolved into.

As the detectives investigate, we are constantly presented with theories followed by, “But maybe not.” Over and over, this is all that happens in the case. It made the story feel slow and pointless, and as if the entire investigation was just a wash (which I realize might have been how the real investigators felt back then, but it doesn’t make for interesting fiction). My favorite example of this is said by the queen herself: “‘The truth always has its day,’ Granny said with a shrug. ‘Until it does not.'” What is even the point of making a statement like that?

There were some strange inconsistencies throughout the book too–for example, early in the book it says that Alice Anne (known as Annie for most of the book) was using an American accent, I assume to blend in, since she was keeping her identity a secret. But later in the book, a reporter muses about the oddity of this Pinkerton detective with the British accent. This is one example of a few things that made me stop and look back to see if I’d missed or mis-remembered something.

Overall, the book was a quick read, but not a very satisfying one for me. The ending was muddled and felt very rushed, after a climax that I don’t even get the purpose of. I think a majority of what I disliked about the book was due to the unsolved crime it was based around, but like with a previous True Colors book I read, perhaps this was simply a bad choice for the subject of a fictional romance book. I found it difficult to care about the relationship, and especially the culmination of the romantic storyline, because the rest of the book was so confusing and underwhelming.

Thank you to Netgalley and Barbour Publishing, Inc. for providing me a copy of this book to review.

An Old Dog Learns New Tricks!

Nora is tired of waiting for her boyfriend of many years, Lane, to propose. She has tried breaking up with him, but he is so distracted, he doesn't notice. Things are going badly in the rest of her life, too. When a tornado touches down in her town, a fire also started in her building. Instead of it being a result of the storm, its cause is more sinister.

She is also having trouble at her restaurant. Nora thinks they might have happened because she hasn't paid enough attention.

Additionally, a well-trained service dog appeared when Lane and Nora were at a wedding. No owner claims him, so the two are devoting themselves to solving the mystery of who he belongs to. While they hunt, Lane is keeping the dog. Having it has reaped many benefits for him including, for the first time in years, Lane is getting a good night's sleep.

Little does Nora know, but Lane is more upset with himself than she is. He is always chastising himself for being a workaholic, coming late, or totally not showing up at all for events with Nora. He loves her, but is secretly dealing with PTSD. It is so bad he can't ask Nora to marry him, and have that as part of her life.

Things come to a head when Nora's family, without her knowledge, decide to pressure Lane into making a commitment. Nora is embarrassed and wonders if this will be the thing to separate them for good.

This is a great mystery with lots of twists, turns, red herrings, and humorous situations. This story also devotes space to Nora and Lane's life and relationship, including the state of their faith. This clean, five-star book will appeal to mystery lovers, and fans of well-written tales.

Thank you, Barbour Publishing and NetGalley, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

This is a read that really highlighted the senses of a dog. Of course, the dog is well trained, or so it is assumed.

This is the sixth book in this series, and it can be read alone, there are recurring characters, and the other books are so good!

This is Nora's story and her relationship Lane, and family and friends are wanting them, or Lane to make a decision!

Enter a solution, on a round about way, a tornado, fire, and unfortunately, drugs, but on the upside a beautiful well trained military dog, that in the end changes lives.

There is also a rescued cat, but there is a mystery, and as the facts unfold, wow, I really didn't see a lot of it coming!

Can't wait for the next book in this series!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Barbour, and was not required to give a positive review.

This is book 12 in The Daughters of the Mayflower series from Barbour Publishing. It is a multi-author series and this is the third book by Kathleen Y’Barbo in the series. She is a tenth-generation Texan and writes Texas fiction. I think this is my favorite book of her’s so far. I absolutely loved the story of Eliza Gentry. Eliza grew up on a ranch in Texas. She was an independent spirited girl and loved going on the Chisholm Trail cattle drives with her father. Her favorite part was lying in bed at night and studying the stars.

Once Eliza became an adult she became betrothed, against her parent’s wishes, to the son of a judge. The son, Ben Barnhart, was a boy that Eliza had grown up with. He was a hot tempered pushy man who thought he was above the law because of his family. He was seeking a career as a politician and was working his way up the ladder to run for the governor of Texas. There was a rift between the Gentry and Barnhart families because of something that happened in Eliza and Ben’s childhood. Eliza’s father did not trust Ben so he hired a detective and protector for Eliza named John Brady to shadow her and keep Ben away from her. It would prove to be more of a challenge than anyone could have imagined.

This is the second book in The Daughters of the Mayflower Series from Barbour Publishing. You will recall I shared the first book, The Mayflower Bride, in a review back in February. I must say the covers for this series are beautiful!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A 12 year old girl named Maribel suffered the loss of her mother and grandfather and her estranged father came to take her away from the only home she had known. They boarded a ship only two days after Maribel got the news of her loss. The ship, the Venganza, was a ship of intrigue… some also called it the Ghost Ship. Once they set sail it was not long before the ship was attacked. Maribel’s father was cast overboard and drowned. Maribel was knocked unconscious in the attack. When she woke she found out she had been taken and cared for by the shipmates and the captain, Jean Beaumont. The plan was to care for her until they found a suitable place to leave her.

Maribel was a spirited bookish girl who quickly took to the seafaring life. She had spent time reading books on the swashbuckling adventures of famous pirates as she great up and saw it all as a great adventure. The captain of the ship seemed very young to be in charge but he commanded great respect from the men in his employ. Captain Beaumont was a man with a mission and a treasure trove of secrets. He had surrounded himself with a great band of men who would give their very lives for him.

Just as Maribel was settling into her new life aboard ship and endearing herself to everyone around her the ship was attacked by the French. As she sat perched in the “look out” reading a book and enjoying an impending storm she was suddenly cast into the sea alone and adrift by a cannonball that hit the rigging. As she was fading in and out of consciousness two of the crew members from the Ghost Ship found her some time later. Their only safe option was to take her to an island with an orphanage run by nuns that was nearby. They knew they could leave her there in good hands. She spent the next 11 years there as an orphan and then as a teacher to the children that came after her.

Those years Maribel spent on the island played tricks on her memory. She relived the life on that ship in her mind as if it were a dream… tidbits came back to her over time and she wondered if it was all just her imagination…. what happened to her captain and his crew… her friends… those who helped her through the loss of her entire family? Would she ever know if it was real? If it was would she ever see those men again? She had so many questions and needed answers.

WHAT I ENJOYED…
Maribel was a charming character! She was an avid reader with an adventurous spirit. She was unlike other young ladies of her time and was not sold on the ideas society had about how young ladies should behave. The Captain and his crew were unusually kind for a bunch of privateers and had a real soft spot for the young girl. The story took place between an island in the Caribbean and New Orleans, Louisiana during the time of it’s French occupation. The connection to the Mayflower was found in Maribel’s mother, Mary Lytton. We see that information given on the first page of chapter 1. The author shares a chart at the beginning of the book to show us her family line. The book is also a Christian fiction with an element of faith throughout. There was adventure and chivalry as well as a bit of intrigue and twisty plot points toward the end. It is a gentle read and would be a good YA book as well as adult.

WHAT I DID NOT LOVE…
The pacing of this book was a letdown…. we spend half the book trying to build the story and another fourth of it setting the scene 11 years after Maribel is left at the orphanage. The adventure and intrigue part of this book did not even begin until about 5 chapters from the end. There was a whole lot of building up to something and then a non-climactic bit of summary to wrap up where they were going. While it is a sweet story with it has a great deal of predictable plot but there were some surprises and that kept me going. I had to see what happened to Maribel after all she had been through.

I give this one a 3 out of 5 stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
The Bark of Zorro by Kathleen Y’Barbo is book Four in the Gone to the Dogs series. The big question in this story is, Who is painting a ‘Z’ on the dogs Lone Star Veterinary Clinic? Receptionist Cassidy Carter is quick to use her social media skills to find the culprit, against the wikl of Texas game warden, Jason Cameron. But it was too late for Jason because Cassity’s post has already gone viral. Now the fun begins.

This is a fun a engaging story I thoroughly enjoyed the journey with Cassitt and Jason as they try to find who is painting all of the ZZ’s. As the two spends time together, the attraction begins to grow as well. Between the Z’s paintings and the sweet romance, it was difficult to put this book down because of the cozy mystery and question of whodunit. If you enjoy a sweet cozy mystery, this is an excellent choice for you! Do pass it up! This on is getting Five Stars from me!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Bark of Zorro by Kathleen Y’Barbo is a Christian/Cozy Mystery Romance. This book continues the stories of those who work at the Lone Star Veterinarian Clinic, where dogs show up with the letter “z” painted on them. Police officers and pet owners each have their own ideas of who is behind the incidents, but none of them agree. Cassidy Carter, the receptionist for the clinic, makes a post on social media that goes viral. Meanwhile, Texas game warden Jason Cameron attempts to solve the case.

I love how the author weaves in all the characters from past books while adding new characters. The dynamics between Cassidy and Cameron really help bring the story to life. As with previous books in this series, I could not put this book down. I had to see how the author would finish this story. The interactions between the characters and the pets made this book as interesting as the other books in this series.

While you could read this book independently, I recommend reading all the books in the series to get the best experience. So if you enjoy books centered around mysterious events or pets, check out this book for yourself. I definitely recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

There's another mystery for the staff of the Lone Star Vet Clinic in Brenham, Texas and this may be the strangest one yet. Who is painting the letter Z on the dogs around Brenham and what is the reason? Cassidy Carter's work at the clinic and her passion for rescuing dogs prompt her to start her own investigation but she soon finds some opposition from a local game warden. Jason Cameron definitely has his own ideas about finding the answers and he doesn't give much credit to Cassidy's amateur sleuthing skills!

Dogs, romance, and intrigue make this a perfect choice for anyone wanting a fun and entertaining cozy mystery. It's a perfect addition to the Gone to the Dogs series and the good news is that there are more books ahead!

Dog lovers of the reading world, come take a look at this fourth book in the Gone to the Dogs cozy series. I heartily recommend The Bark of Zorro by Kathleen Y’Barbo and its three predecessors! While Bark can read alone, it will give a few spoilers if the books are read out of sequence.

I was thrilled to be returning to the little town of Brenham, Texas, and the Lone Star Vet Clinic, plus the Second Chance Dog Rescue that keeps several of the clinic’s workers busy in their off-hours.

This time we are treated to Cassidy Carter’s story. She is the office manager for the vet clinic, as well as one of Mari’s volunteers at the dog rescue. The mayhem, hilarity, and whispers of romance start when Cassidy is called upon to rescue a dog by herself, in the dark, from an area that she grew up dreading.

Jason is the by-the-book new game warden, with a few secrets. He may have movie star looks, but he seems to have less-than-stellar regard for Cassidy and her ways, where a rescue justifies the means. As the two appear to become an item, can their romance survive their individual philosophies and commitments?

I loved that I was guessing about the perpetrator all throughout the book. Y’Barbo creates some unique and quirky characters that are memorable, even though they aren’t the main characters.

I had fun imagining with Cassidy and Nora what their new place would develop into. By now, I almost feel like I would like to try to draw a map of Brenham, as Y’Barbo and her series co-writer have made it seem so fun and appealing.

Y’Barbo throws some curve balls you won’t see coming which help muddle the mystery. There are a few loose ends in my mind, but they may be answered in the (yay)! remaining two books of the series.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit via NetGalley. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

If you are a dog lover and have not yet picked up one of the Gone to the Dogs mysteries, you are missing out. In The Bark of Zorro by Kathleen Y’Barbo, dogs are turning up with painted letters on them, and the gang at the Lone Star Veterinary Clinic are on the case.

This book features Cassidy who is the office manager and Mari’s best friend (if you are new to the series, Mari’s story is book one). I loved the dynamic between Cassidy and Jason (and especially their introduction). You’ve got the no-nonsense rule-follower Jason and the independent, sometimes rule-breaker Cassidy. I also appreciated that Cassidy’s love interest wasn’t the person I thought it was going to be based on hints in the previous books. Although, there is a connection there.

My one complaint about this book was the mystery. There were plenty of suspects but not a single crumb pointing to the person actually behind the incidents. This made the reveal more frustrating than satisfying (at least for me. I like to at least be on the right trail.).

Other than that one little blip, I think this was my favorite of the series so far. There are two more women at the clinic to get their stories, and I look forward to both.

Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive or negative review. All opinions are my own.

Z Marks the Spot!

Cassidy is alone on a very dark, stormy night in a deserted area looking for a stray dog. She is a volunteer at the local dog rescue, along with the office manager of a veterinary clinic.

Flashes of lightning reveal the dog who is scared and wet. Cassidy scoops the dog up, gets in her van, and takes off before a creepy figure in black catches up to her.

While cleaning Spot, as Cassidy names her, she discovers that someone put a lot of white paint on the animal. Cassidy is so incensed by it that she vows to find the one behind it. Finding Spot also causes Cassidy to meet Justin, the handsome game warden, who comes to investigate her.

Justin is a no-nonsense lawman who tells her he will cite her if she attempts to drive since her license just expired. He also asks her out! Despite them having a great date, things start falling apart when more painted dogs start showing up. Cassidy wants to investigate and Justin thinks only the authorities should be involved. Will this cause their new relationship to fall apart? Red herrings and clues abound.

Humor and a serious mystery combine to make a fun, clean tale. Lots of twists and suspects will keep you trying to guess who is behind it all. This story stands alone despite being part of a series, and includes the character's faith. You will enjoy this five-star book. It is recommended to fans of mysteries, contemporary stories, and fun!

This is the fourth book in this series that I have read and enjoyed!

This one focus on Cassidy Carter, who is the Lone Star Veterinary Clinic receptionist, and we join this read as she is about late one night to rescue a dog! Enter Texas Game Warden Justin, and we are on an adventure to find out who is stealing dogs and painting them with the letter "Z".

When I say adventure we are off with some sweet romance, dog stealing, exciting new business and living arrangements, but boy are there twists!

All four of these reads are very enjoyable, and I looking forward to the next two! Yes, they can be read alone, they have recurring characters, and the authors do bring us up to date! Your in for a treat with this Gone To The Dogs series!
