Wing easily exhibits his ability to create well-rounded, authentic characters in a genre traditionally populated by stock characters. And the ways in which he subverts characterization doesn’t feel gimmicky or pandering to a modern audience. Instead, it’s to illustrate the fact that no one is as they seem at first glance and that there are many sides to people. We’re all capable of being the hero, the villain, or the antagonist with every decision that we make.

As someone who doesn’t naturally gravitate toward mythological stories, I appreciated the very grounded perspective that this story took. It didn’t require you to be an expert in the genre, though it helped to know a bit about the Greek gods and other mythological characters, such as the Minotaur and the legend of the labyrinth. To Greek-myth connoisseurs, they’re going to get a refreshing spin on an old story.

On her 119th birthday, the matriarch of the Merrill family is rushed to the hospital. Before she passes, Ayla Merrill recounts the story of how she and her husband, Oliver met. Listening is her great-granddaughter, Cass. Cass has always loved her great-grandmother's stories and the magic that it brings into her life. Cass can't believe that she has never heard the story of how Ayla and Oliver met. However, as Ayla tells her unbelievable tale, Cass begins to realize that something isn't quite right.
With a mix of fantasy, family and folklore, Matriarch took me on an unforgettable journey. I was entranced from the very beginning with hints of Fate, Destiny and Doom alongside a dying 119 year old woman. As soon as Ayla begins to unravel her history for Cass, I was entwined by the atmosphere and mystery that was created. I loved the inclusion of Turkish folklore of the Erbörü along with other magical elements. Matriarch is an example of masterful storytelling weaving together romance, suspense and unexpected twists and turns while sharing the importance of love and promises. I was constantly surprised by this story until the very end.

A really cool fantasy novella. It starts in the present day, where the 119-year-old Ayla (known to most as “Gran”) is hospitalised after a fall, and with the hospital staff warning that she's not really expected to recover, great-granddaughter Cass sits down to listen to one final family story – one that Ayla promises that Cass hasn't heard before. That story begins in Turkey, shortly after Turkey's War of Independence. A British soldier, enamoured with the country, is wandering around it to put off going home. At some point he becomes a farmhand on the small property of a humble, but warmly welcoming couple. Going off in pursuit of a “werewolf” that keeps picking off their flock and is undeterrable by fences, he crosses paths with a jinn and a twisted love story unfolds. It's a compelling read with surprises in store right up to the end, and easily finished in an hour or so! I'd certainly recommend it.… (plus d'informations)
