Courte biographie
Effie Leland was born in North Carolina, and graduated from Converse College in South Carolina, where she majored in English.
In the 1930s, she married Allison F.P. Wilder, with whom she had four children. She was active in community groups, worked as a secretary, and was a frequent contributor to the Charleston News & Courier. Her first publication to reach a national audience was her short story, "Mama Needs New Shoes," published in The Saturday Evening Post in 1958. She went on to author or co-author several nonfiction books, including Pawley's Island: A Living Legend; Henry Woodward: Forgotten Man of American History; and Tales and Taradiddles: A Scrapbook of Southern Hilarity, all self-published. At age 85, after she had moved into the Summerville Presbyterian Home, she published a first novel that brought her fame: Out to Pasture. She went on to publish four more books, Older But Wilder, One More Time, Over What Hill? and Oh, My Goodness!, the last one shortly before her death at age 97.

This was our book club pick for September. While it was an enjoyable book, I found the humor wonderful but a very basic read.

Effie's tales of life in her retirement community feel a bit like they are running out of steam in this third of her series. Many of the anecdotes have been widely repeated elsewhere, and it matters not to the reader whether she is the borrower or borrowee.

Once again, there is no problem that can't be solved by a night of reminiscences by her co-retirees or a quick conversation with someone who knows someone who has the solution to her latest human project's need. It's all very reassuring and calm, and just the thing for a case of rattled nerves or gloomy outlook that needs to enter a world -- even a pastel-colored fantasy one -- where everything is bound to turn out right. Just don't look for intricate plotting or deep insights here.… (plus d'informations)

Charming little collection of fictionalized reminiscences about the goings-on in a retirement home, written by a first-time author who does in fact live in one. The characters are crisply drawn, and there are many smiles as well as a few poignant moments.

Book 4 of Fair Acres Series pokes fun at growing older, reflecting on the special wisdom gained from aging, as well as the challenges and losses along the way.
