I’ll start my blurb by saying that I wasn’t sure this was my kind of book. I’m not really part of the Instafamilia and I’m “so over” the Jen Hatmaker-esque conversational style of writing. In spite of all that, this book got to me. The chapters about seeing people and having empathy for our fellow humans were nothing that I haven’t heard a hundred times from a hundred different pastors, but I needed to hear it again. I think we probably all need to hear it again.

Carlos has preached at my church on this book and it was a good sermon. The book however I didn't really connect with. He had some great concepts of getting to the root of problems and his revelation of losing faith in Christ and regaining it. A little like a self help booked mixed with Bible scripture.

I’ve been a follower of the author, Carlos Whittaker (@loswhit), on Instagram for several years and consider myself part of the #instafamilia he’s encouraged on that platform. This book reminds the reader of how to focus on what we all have in common and not on what divides us. This book does have a religious aspect, but I think the overall book would also be a good read for those that don’t consider themselves religious. One topic that’s repeated throughout is “don’t stand on issues, walk with people.” This is the true way to impact the lives of others – and be a better version of ourselves.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I've followed Carlos on IG for several years now, back when he was building bluebird houses and getting excited over birds (me too!). I was really looking forward to this book but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. I love Carlos' heart for people and his compassion for others has always shone through. I appreciated that he told stories about realizing his own biases and owning up to mistakes. But much of the content felt overly simplistic and overly positive. That may sound strange, but it got old hearing about how all of his conversations ended up being life changing and relationship strengthening. The truth is, most of us don't have that happen. I wish he would have talked more about people who are disrespectful in their opposing viewpoints and are hard to love on (or don't want your love and compassion). I think he could have addressed the anger that many Americans seem to direct towards those they identify as "other." Overall I appreciate the message of the book and agreed with so much of what he said. I just wish there was a little more depth.… (plus d'informations)
