Courte biographie
Musician, Music Editor, Journalist. Known as "The Singing Master", he was an important figure in American spiritual music. With Elisha James King he compiled the influential shape note tunebook "The Sacred Harp". White was a fifer in the War of 1812, and moved his family to Harris County, Georgia by covered wagon in May of 1842. He served as Clerk of the Inferior Court of Harris County, Georgia, and mayor of Whitesville, Georgia. He was also editor of the first Harris County newspaper, "The Organ". "The Sacred Harp" was first published in 1844; co-editor King died that year and White oversaw four reissues through 1870. He then bequeathed the rights to the book to his sons.

A very nice reprint of J. L. White's 1911 edition of his father's tune book.

This is a must-have for Alto sacred harp singers. The arrangements are often slightly different from the Denson book, and many (if not most) of the Alto parts are completely different and awesome. Many Alto parts are written by women, and are sometimes much more singable than those in the Denson book. Some are also not as interesting, but they're fun anyway. As far as I know the Treble, Tenor & Bass parts are the same. Also contains songs not in the Denson book.

I'm editing this to mention that since attending a singing school by singing master Tollie Lee, I have learned that there are subtle differences in the bass parts, but I'm not sure if they're actually written into the songs. Many songs have bass parts with customarily-sung "grace notes" which seem to be great fun for the basses. :)… (plus d'informations)
