A great new installment in the Skeptic Detective series. This time we're headed to Alaska, where Harlan and Genevieve have a new mystery to unravel. There's a lot on the line, and Whitaker did a great job of building up the tension and suspense, as well as moving things along at a decent pace. The imagery really brought the whole story to life, and it was like stepping into the midst of everything as it unfolds. Highly recommend for anyone who loves amateur detective mysteries!

This book is well-plotted. I enjoyed going along for the ride and the debunking of the haunted house. I would loosely compare it to The Haunting of Hill House (except there were actually ghosts in that one).

So why only 3 stars? Well, the storytelling is at times disjointed, and at times difficult to follow. There were several times I wasn't sure who was talking, and as much as I appreciated the backstory, I struggled with the way it was introduced (and in this regard, I would compare it to Anne Rice and Lasher. A story within a story.

Would I recommend it? Yeah. At the end of the day, it was a good read.

What a great way to kick off a new series. Mystery meets haunted house in this unique paranormal cross-genre book. I love how the mystery was woven in with strange occurrences and a reality show that aims to (hopefully) uncover the solution to the mystery. There were some nice twists, just when I thought I knew where the story was going, Whitaker changed direction. The characters were diverse and interesting, and each brought their own flavoring to the book. Highly recommend for mystery lovers looking for a few chills, and all horror lovers!… (plus d'informations)

Short but intense!

People always do things they’re warned not to do. That’s how bestselling author Gene ends up in his predicament. After the death of his Aunt Hazel, he finds the charred remains of a book with particular instructions to not read. Out of desperation, he does and writes a story based on what he’s read. As soon as the copies are distributed, he realizes the mistake he’s made.

Though this was a very short read, it was also satisfying. There was the right amount of mystery and suspense plus the ending was a bit of a twist that reminded me of an ‘80’s horror movie. Even though I didn’t particularly like Gene’s character, I found him to be relatable.

If you’re a fan of horror/supernatural suspense, this is the book for you!
