But I really enjoyed this book and its characters. It has depth, real life doubts and struggles, a sweet second chance romance - where the initial falling for each other was when the characters were teenagers and both thought the other one wasn’t seriously interested - an adorable baby, growing as a character and growing in faith.
I did not quite like that it seemed like at least in the past Steve dated casually while still considering himself a Christian and I think Christians who don’t want to marry shouldn’t date at all.
“Fine. Most women are looking for something long-term, something that’s going to lead to marriage, and that’s not me.”
Maybe I’m reading too much into his words and actions, but I always appreciate when it is very clear that Christians should approach things - like dating - differently than most non-believers.
To be honest, Chloe’s thoughts about relationships and how both ended up overthinking their previous actions and misconceptions kind of made up for Steve’s previous more or less careless attitude towards relationships, at least for me.
“Attraction meant nothing. Acceptance, self-sacrifice and a commitment to putting Christ at the center of a relationship - those were the things she wanted to find in a romantic partner sometimes.”
I enjoyed that faith was woven into the story and that especially Steve was able to put false assumptions about himself and the meaning of the gospel aside, that he learned to forgive himself and others, (I absolutely LOVED his father’s letter!) to accept help and to mend his relationship with Chloe in realizing that with the Lord’s help he can be a worthy husband.
This was a sweet and wholesome romance and I am looking forward to the next story in Cape Cod.
