This edition of Washday at the Pa includes a publishers note from Caxton Press, recommended reading as it definitely adds to the value of the text (and images)
Subtitled "The Pursuit of Life", this book is a monograph of 1980s Maoridom. The photographs are in black and white. There is, therefore, a richness and a sadness that would be missed if they were in colour. I wonder what sort of a gut feeling I would have got if the subjects in each case were white New Zealanders. This lot are gut-wrenching for me.
