From the Introduction
Early Franciscan theologians such as Bonaventure and Scotus were attentive to the natural world as a source of theology. While Bonaventure’s doctrine of exemplarism pointed to an integral relationship between God and creation, Scotus’s doctrine of univocal being provided a theology of creation that resonates with modern science. Less known, however, are the Franciscans who followed Bonaventure and Scotus. In this small volume, Brother Keith Warner has provided an invaluable contribution by highlighting three Franciscan Friars who engaged the science of their day and developed scientific insights along the lines of Franciscan spirituality. Perhaps the best known among these Friars is Roger Bacon, a disciple of Robert Grosseteste and the father of experimental science. He was influenced by the Islamic mathematician and philosopher Alhazen and developed a mathematical analysis of light and vision that eventually led to the understanding of optics. The other two Friars, Bartholomew the Englishman and Bernardino de Sahagún are less well known but their writings were extensive and significant.
