The first novel by an Australian writer. The story is well-told; driving home one night from a party a woman kills a pedestrian who suddenly appears in front of his car on a rainy night. She leaves the scene of the accident and the gets away with it. The book deals with her turmoil. The author captures well that terrible conflict that we would all face in knowing what is the right thing to do, but being "blameless" and with the prospect of "getting away with it", being sorely tempted to do just that. I liked very much her phrase "fate-fuelled instant" because it captures that sense of the randomness of lines of life and experience that suddenly intersect, for good or for ill.… (plus d'informations)
