I was excited to receive this book through the ER program, but just couldn't get into it. Reading the essays, I felt like the author was trying too hard - like a stand up comic working for a laugh. Although I do enjoy the essay-style book, Laurie Notaro & Celia Rivenbark are laugh out loud.

I felt a bit disconnected from this book, though I am of the age for these essays, my thoughts about aging, fashion and beauty are antithesis to the feelings expressed. I know that is was meant to be humorous, but I not find it so.

Just like another early reviewer book I had gotten, I'd written a review of this quite some time back. I'm not sure why it didn't remain online. Beth's discussion and humorous insight into our beauty and youth obsessed culture was a delight to read. With some tips, some laughter, some comical jabs...this book is a must read!

Drinking Problems at the Fountain of Youth is a collection of related essays concerning the ridiculousness of the extremes we go through in order to slow the look of aging. The author, Beth Teitell, is a talented writer and has researched her subject well. She has an acerbic tongue of wit similar to Nora Ephron, Sarah Vowell and Beth Lisick.

Drinking Problems at the Fountain of Youth is geared toward those with a strong interest in the fashion & beauty industry. If you haven’t read Vogue or Cosmo in years and prefer Country Living to Elle, you’ll probably only find this collection amusing. There’s a disconnection from the section of America between NYC and L.A., a misstep for the gals who use Noxzema and Vaseline. Though the humor attempts to poke fun at the industry, it’s obvious that Teitell is an insider and she tries a bit too hard to make us believe she’s one of us.
All in all, Drinking Problems at the Fountain of Youth is a clever collection; it just didn’t speak to the worries of this (more typical than typical) forty-four year old woman.
