Having exhibited internationally to great acclaim, Shen Yuan is emerging as one of the most important and innovative artists working in Europe today. Living and working in Paris since 1990, she forms part of a generation of artists who left China to pursue their artistic practice. This is the first monograph to be published on the artist's career and takes the readers on a visually exciting journey of Shen Yuan's work to date. Documenting past projects and work in progress for her first major solo exhibition, this book also includes colourful sketchbook pages of both realised and unrealised projects, which provide insight into the artist's working process. '

Shen Yuan's articulation of the performance in her work is the best metaphor for the new identity of contemporary women engaged in the process of cultural negotiation. The gesture clearly refuses any pedagogical fixing of identity: instead it is involved in an ongoing process of reconstruction, receptive and adaptable to a changing reality.'

(Abstract from Hou Hanru and Evelyne Jouanno)

'Shen Yuan's work, made in an age of increasingly rapid communication, technologies and the mass migration of peoples across the globe, points to the limits of language to describe and translate lived experience in a new global economy.'

(Abstract from Gilane Tawadros)

The direct experience of migration is important to Shen Yuan as an artist. She touches on concepts such as globalisation, language, translation, meaning and subjectivity, in sculptures and installations which may be playfull, alluring, repellent and unsettling. She appears intent on creating atmospheres and effects, enacting psychological states by engaging the senses.'
