Il film è liberamente ispirato a un episodio che ha segnato la fine della carriera del filosofo Friedrich Nietzsche. Il 3 gennaio 1889, in piazza Alberto a Torino, Nietzsche si gettò, piangendo, al collo di un cavallo brutalizzato dal suo cocchiere, poi perse conoscenza. Dopo questo episodio, che costituisce il prologo del film, il filosofo non scrisse più e sprofondò nella follia e nel mutismo.
