Critiques

The Way of Chinese Painting is based on Mai-mai Sze's "The Tao of Painting", published in two large volumes by the Bollingen Foundation in 1956... In this shorter version, the author defines the essence of Chinese painting as a form of art as well as a way of life.'

(Excerpt from back cover)

Includes selections from her translation of the 17th century classic "Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting."

Originally published as Volume 2 of 'The Tao of Painting', this is the first English translation of the famous Chinese handbook, the "Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan" (original, 1679-1701). Mai-mai Sze has translated and annotated the texts of instructions, discussions of the fundamentals of painting, notes on the preparation of colors, and chief editorial prefaces.
