Anthony Stewart is Associate Professor in the English Department at Dalhousie University. His main research interest is twentieth-century African American Literature. Very readable and reasonable consideration of race and hidden racism in university education and in Canada at large, where our "social contract" specifies that we don't notice race... we don't mention race... and racism does not exist -- but of course we do notice, and it does. As a white Canadian, I have little personal experience of racism directed at myself, but I found Stewart's perspicacious comments about being an "only", a unique person of minority race in a group, quite enlightening because much of what he said about how this situation - even regardless of the attitudes of the majority group - changes one's own behaviour, mirrors my own experience in university, as the sole non-Asian in various Chinese-speaking groups.… (plus d'informations)
