David Pearce's chapter is perhaps the best one on the side of those saying that a superAI/transhumanist singularity should be expected and hoped for. Theodore Modis's says no, arguing that what look like exponential growth curves are always the beginnings of sigmoid curves that eventually level off. Two late chapters unacceptably insult singularity theorists by calling their ideas religion-like ("techno-supernaturalistic", "fideistic"). One of these, by Diane Proudfoot, does include a good analysis of why copying, as opposed to transformation, would be an unsatisfactory approach to mind uploading. Contributions and commentaries by many other authors with different styles and points of view. Inadequately edited for word and grammar errors.
