Being a cowboy is a part of my family. My father owns cattle and my brother is a cowboy. I read this book to explore how Staton repackaged the history of cowboys for a new generation of readers. The content is very accurate and detailed. Staton includes some history of the American cowboy that I did not know such as Columbus is credited with introducing cows to the Western hemisphere. The American cowboy grew out of the tradition of the Mexican vasqueros and they adopted their techniques from the Spanish cowboy. Staton also discusses Amerindian cowboys and Black cowboys.
