This is probably the greatest collection of short stories I've ever read! There was only one story that was so-so, and that was mostly because in trying to make an homage they didn't add anything new. The rest were fantastic, and I didn't want the book to end.

The first edition of the compilation was 5-star yummy! This one was good, but there was only one extraordinary story (The Earth Ship by Graham Storrs), one really good one (Digital Commander by J.S. Morin), and the rest were enjoyable, but this collection certainly wasn't the mind-blowing, ravenously engrossing level of the previous one.

The start of this book was fantastic. It kind of lost my attention about the time the characters ended up in the fantasy world, but I kept going as there were so many reviews. I'm glad I did. The end of the book left me wanting more, as I've gotten to really like the characters and the world.

I'm not wildly enthusiastic, but I'd gotten really comfortable and into the story. So: I need to know what happens!

Thank you to the author for the advanced copy!

I think one of my biggest gripes with this book is that I couldn't remember all the details from the first book, which was a problem because the book didn't really help me. It was straight into the story - full speed ahead! Great if you've just finished the first book, not so good if it was about four months ago.

The world building in these books is pretty awesome: the sheer inventiveness of the details of each race, the two different worlds, etc., is fascinating and pulls you right on in.

Some of the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny. The author really hits the nail on the head with the pre-teen phrases and spunky look at the world. I loved that!

That being said, I can't give this book a 5/5 rating. I wish I could give it a 3.5/5. It just really didn't always catch my attention. It occasionally felt like a bit of a slog. I felt like I was trying to catch up and figure things out, a bit too much. Maybe there is just too much going on. I'm not sure.

I'll definitely read the final book, because I'm hoping it will all come together. I want all of the protagonists to survive and I want to hear more about these gnomes!
