Jane Smith (1) (1962–)

This is a truly international collection of matchbox labels, one of the branches of phillumeny ("lovers of light", as collectors of matchbox labels and matchbooks are known). The text is in English, French and Spanish. The color photographs are arranged by subject, e.g. architecture, animals, and within that series put out by one manufacturer, or similar examples from a variety of manufacturers. There are brief discussions of sets of labels. There is no detailed information on each label, which may be a disappointment to serious collectors. Still, it is a desirable book for their shelves.

As someone who is not a collector, but who has an interest in popular culture this is an excellent work. The layout of the pages is attractive and uncluttered. Most of the labels are produced at what I would assume to be life-size.

I find it interesting that in collecting match art, it is apparently not necessary to have it in "pristine" condition. It appears that these labels are mostly detached from their boxes, and the dangers of retaining the original matches are obvious!
