I very much liked this book, from the genderfluidity that was so matter of fact, to the magical training, the shapeshifting and how each of the four classes of witches/familiars learned their abilities. The relationship between Rosa and Shaw is developed in a most interesting manner and the cast of supporting players are quite intriguing as well. I very much look forward to the second book

This is a pretty fascinating world -- I love the imagery of the semi-sentient bone forest and the transformation magic. I love the courting rituals and the school setting. I feel like there are some pretty obvious big betrayals coming that indicate why this culture is stuck in perpetual war, but I appreciate the originality of the world-building and the decent, if sometimes mystifying, characters.
